Canthoplasty Types

Canthoplasty is performed for short width of the eye or inner eyes that are covered with epicanthal folds, looking rather stuffy. It is performed to attain large open eyes. There are various types of canthoplasties, such as medial epicanthoplasty, medial-upper canthoplasty, lateral canthoplasty, and lower canthoplasty. One or more of these operations are concurrently performed, depending on the condition of the eyes and the desired effect.

What is Medial Epicanthoplasty?

This is a procedure to remove the epicanthal folds.

Mongolian folds are characteristic of Mongolians. About 60% of Koreans have
Mongolian folds that cover the medial aspect of the eyes.

The distance, between the eyes, is long and stuffy looking. In such cases, medial epicanthoplasty performed along the center of the inner eyelash line, which is not easily seen externally, engenders soft eyes and provides an impression of large wide-open eyes.
