Canthoplasty Types

Canthoplasty is performed for short width of the eye or inner eyes that are covered with epicanthal folds, looking rather stuffy. It is performed to attain large open eyes. There are various types of canthoplasties, such as medial epicanthoplasty, medial-upper canthoplasty, lateral canthoplasty, and lower canthoplasty. One or more of these operations are concurrently performed, depending on the condition of the eyes and the desired effect.

What is Lower Canthoplasty?

This is a surgical approach in which the outer portions
of the eyes are pulled down to increase vertical length (height)
of the eyes.

It gives the impression of having large eyes. Lower canthoplasty is a procedure, in which the lateral canthal
line is pulled down toward the lower eyelid. For Asians, the lateral canthal line is slanted upward. It gives either
a fierce look or a stuffy feeling due to its covering of the lower pupil.
The result of low canthoplasty is the lengthening effect of the height of the eyes as the outer aspect of the eye descents. Hence,
the eye lines would transform to a softer and more amicable look.

Cases requiring Lower Canthoplasty

01

Cases with fierce looking eyes due to upward slanting of the lateral canthal line

02

Cases with short width (horizontal length) of the eyes

03

Cases with stuffy feeling of the eyes due to covering of the lower pupil

04

Cases desiring to have soft and amicable eye lines.

The Advantages of Lower Canthoplasty

01

It is minimal swelling and leaves almost no scars.

02

The elongated effect is maximized by extending the width of the eye.

03

An upwardly-slanted lateral canthal line is corrected by opening up the aspect of the lateral canthus.

04

A crowding look of the eyes in the direction of the medial canthus can be corrected.
