Canthoplasty Types
Canthoplasty is performed for short width of the eye or inner eyes that are covered with epicanthal folds, looking rather stuffy. It is performed to attain large open eyes. There are various types of canthoplasties, such as medial epicanthoplasty, medial-upper canthoplasty, lateral canthoplasty, and lower canthoplasty. One or more of these operations are concurrently performed, depending on the condition of the eyes and the desired effect.
What is Lateral Canthoplasty?
Lateral canthoplasty is a procedure that opens the lateral canthus (tail) of the eye, which lengthens the width of the eye and corrects the shape of the lateral canthi (tails) of the eyes. Lateral canthoplasty may be a simple procedure that engenders wide open eyes with an unruffled look by improving the effect of crowding toward the inner canthus.

adhesion of the surgical site may occur depending on the eye pattern, as time passes.
This procedure is indicated for cases with a short width of the eye, and involves extension of the lateral aspect of the eye.
Cases requiring Lateral Canthoplasty
Cases with fierce-looking lateral canthi
Cases with a depressed look due to declining lateral canthi
Cases with stuffy-looking eyes due to a short distance between the medial canthus and the pupil
Cases requiring to modify the morphologic pattern of the eyes by lengthening the width (horizontal axis).
The Advantages of Lateral Canthoplasty
It is minimal swelling and leaves almost no scars.
The elongated effect is maximized by extending the width of the eye.
An upwardly-slanted lateral canthal line is corrected by opening up the aspect of the lateral canthus.
A crowded look of the eyes in the direction of the medial canthus can be corrected.
