What is Inverted nipple?

Normally, the nipples are projected than the areola, and differ depending on the individual age, pregnancy, childbirth, etc.

It can be projected from 1cm to over 2~3cm. Inverted nipples refer to when the nipples are sunken down lower than the surface of the breasts. The causes are unclear, but it is known to be due to the imbalance in development of the mamary gland that secretes milk and the laticifer that connects the nipple, and because that the tissue supporting the nipple is relatively thinner.
Inverted nipples may have secretion caught to result in inflammation, and may destroy the mammary gland tissue. Also, the nipples may be inverted due to the symptom of breast cancer, which may give mental anxiety.

Types of Inverted nipple according to the Conditions

Type A

Minor inverted nipple with occasional retraction

This is the case where natural healing is possible, and inverted nipple can be corrected through a long-period of suction by massages or breast pumps. Sometimes, it can be healed naturally during breast-feeding.

Type B

The nipples are normally retracted with occasional protrusion.

These retracted nipples are protruded occasionally by stimulation, and corrective surgery is recommended for breast-feeing and to prevent an inflammation.

Type C

Severe inverted nipple

The retracted nipples are not protruded even with stimulation, and corrective surgery is recommended for breast-feeing and to prevent an inflammation.

What is Inverted nipple surgery?

Generally nipples are moderately protruded forwards, but there are occasional cases where the nipples are buried inside the breasts, or are flat or hidden without protruding.

In these cases, correction is required not only for aesthetic purpose, but also for breast-feeding, hygiene, and to prevent breast diseases such as mastitis or mammary duct ectasia, etc.
In Apgujeong YK Plastic Surgery Clinic, YK’s exclusive perfect corrective surgery that has no cicatrix and recurrence is performed, and the symmetry with the opposite side is also considered for a good aesthetic look. This technique was presented through the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, Korean American Medical Association, etc.

Surgical Method on Inverted Nipples

The tissues are observed through a 3.5 times magnifying glass to create 4 pippins to change the direction. The ‘perfect corrective surgery’ by Apgujeong YK is performed only on the tissue below the nipples. Therefore, the surgery has no scars or recurrence.

Local anesthetics are applied around a nipple to locate the nipple.

Incision is made on both sides of the nipple

The fibrous tissues pulling the nipple are cut.

The tissues underneath are used to fix the nipple from being retracted.

The shape of the nipple is formed to be stitched.
